“Closing Books Shuts Out Ideas” is the theme for the 27th annual celebration of the freedom to read. This freedom includes not only the freedom to choose what we read, but also to select from a full array of possibilities. Come to your local library and check out the displays of books that have been banned or threatened throughout history. Challenges are requests to have the books removed from school or library shelves. The challenges reported reflect a continuing concern with a wide variety of themes, from witchcraft in the Harry Potter series to racism in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings to gay marriage in And Tango Makes Three.
